Its origin is lost in the mists of time, being among the oldest on the island. Pastena describes four different varieties of Catarratto [KAH-tahr-RAT-toh]: the common or Latin Catarratto, the glossy catarratto “spargolo”, the glossy and tight Catarratto and the extra-bright or extra Catarratto. Mandricardo’s namesake is ally to the African king, determined to avenge his parents’ death at the hands of Orlando in “Orlando Furioso”. The front label represents Orlando, after killing a dragon on his quest for Angelica’s love.
